185/65 R15: how to read your tire size

Four marks on the sidewall are enough to find the right tire, and its fitted price.

The size is written on the sidewall of each tire, for example 185/65 R15. It is usually also on a label in the driver’s door frame or in the service booklet.

What each number means

  • 185: the tire width, in millimetres
  • 65: the sidewall height, as a percentage of the width
  • R: radial construction, used by almost all car tires
  • 15: the rim diameter, in inches

Right after come the load index and the speed rating (for example 88H). When in doubt, keep the original ones.
